The #NOMtourFAIL elephant in the room: Check out Brian Brown’s new propaganda, er, video

NOM Tour Tracker Right-wing

By Eden James

Brian Brown just hit the National Organization for Marriage’s email list with the premiere of some prime propaganda — a video recap of NOM’s “Summer for Marriage: One Man, One Woman” tour.

You know, the tour in which, equality supporters outnumbered NOM supporters by nearly 3-to-1, according to our on-the-ground hand-counts by Arisha, Anthony, Phyllis, Danny and Robert across the country?

  • Number of equality supporters, as hand-counted by 3,419
  • Number of NOM supporters, as hand-counted by 1,274

But you wouldn’t know it from the tight shots employed by Louis and the NOM videographers, showing handfuls of people selected to make the crowds look much larger than they actually were.

Check it out for yourself:

As Brian Brown put it:

Pulling 3 minutes of highlights from more than 30 hours of footage taken at 23 rallies over the past month is no small task!

Especially when there are fewer people at your rallies than NOM staffers!

As Jeremy Hooper says over at Good As You, Brown predictably chose to use the screaming match in Providence as the primary framing on the video, setting up the victim narrative yet again, even though he was using a bus tour to attack the legitimacy of same-sex couples merely wanting the same right he enjoys.

And Jeremy points out that Brown fudged the truth yet again. It’s not a “new” web site, Brian, it’s a relaunching of the same web site that failed the first time (back in 2009):

Brian Brown

We’re producing our own video version of events and let’s just say that it will be a bit more, er, accurate.

Meanwhile, let us know in the comments what other fabrications you see in this video — and what you think about them. (In the extended entry, I’m posting Brian Brown’s full email)…

NOM’s email alert:

New Marriage Tour Video and NOM’s Next Steps . . . August 25, 2010

Dear Marriage Supporter,

Our video team has just finished a terrific 3-minute video recapping our Summer for Marriage tour and introducing our new emphasis as we head into the fall. I hope you’ll take a moment to watch.

Click here to watch the video (scroll down):

Pulling 3 minutes of highlights from more than 30 hours of footage taken at 23 rallies over the past month is no small task! But so many amazing things happened over the past month that I wanted to be sure that our entire team – including each of you – has a chance to watch and be a part of it.

On August 15th, we wrapped up our month-long Summer for Marriage Tour with an enthusiastic crowd of 300 (and live Internet broadcast) at the Rally for Marriage outside the U.S. Capitol, standing with religious and community leaders in the District to call for the people’s right to vote on marriage.

When we first started out on this month-long journey, we envisioned a series of quiet rallies to energize marriage supporters in key battleground states where marriage is under attack. Little did we know how threatened our opponents would be by our tour. But their protests, all too often characterized by hateful intolerance, only raised the profile of the tour, drawing media attention and new supporters to our cause. I was so proud of our supporters at each of the 23 stops – standing together to celebrate marriage, responding with grace and determination even when gay marriage radicals sought to shout us down, harass and intimidate. Thank you.

Use this link to watch the Tour Recap Video (scroll down if needed):
Or go to to see video summaries from each tour stop.!

One of the purposes of the summer tour was to continue expanding our base of grassroots activists for marriage – we’re already more than 700,000 strong and well on our way toward our goal of identifying and organizing an army of 2 million Americans willing to stand up to protect marriage.

We’ve just re-launched our website, with a whole new look to make it easy for guests to sign the petition to protect marriage, and then share the site with friends. I hope you’ll visit the site today and tell your friends!

With just over two months left before the November elections, we’re launching a major new initiative to reach out to Americans from every walk of life, in every city, county and state across the nation. The effort will center around the new website, supplemented by radio, TV and internet ads, Facebook, Twitter, direct mail, phone calls and emails, as we use every available avenue to reach out to new supporters.

But the most important part of this new initiative is YOU! If each of us were to tell just two others about the campaign to protect marriage, we’d quickly reach our goal of 2 million Americans standing for marriage. In order to reach our goal even faster, we’re using paid advertising to help spread the word.

So here’s what I’m asking you to do today:

1. Forward this email to at least two friends who don’t already know about NOM’s work to protect marriage. Ask them to visit and sign the petition to protect marriage.
2. If you’re in a position to give, please consider a gift of $20, $50, or even $100 or more to help get the word out. Your gift helps us reach out into new areas and untapped networks of potential supporters. Use this link to make your secure online gift today!

These next two months as we head into the November elections will be critical for the future of marriage in our nation. There’s a great crop of new pro-marriage candidates running for office all across the country, and I urge you to join us as we continue spreading the word!
Brian Brown

Didn't they used to have over 700,000 joined? Did they lose 200,000?

  • 8. Skemono  |  August 25, 2010 at 10:37 am

the Defense of Marriage Act — the only federal law protecting the marriage statutes of 44 states. … this effort to undercut state marriage laws.

Sounds like someone doesn't understand how federalism works. DOMA doesn't affect state marriage laws, and neither would repealing it.

I tried; I really did. But I just can't make myself watch BS Brown.

  • 11. JonT  |  August 25, 2010 at 11:14 am

I'll give it a try, even though I know what it will be like.

Maybe I'll down a couple glasses of wine first.

  • 12. Kate  |  August 25, 2010 at 11:18 am

I'm passing on watching it …I don't drink, and that seems the only way to be able to endure it.

    Just sayin'….

  • 14. Alan E.  |  August 25, 2010 at 11:53 am

I'm against sweet tea vodka after my brother drank too much, called me at 1 in the morning (4 his time) demanding that I call his girlfriend who he just got into a fight with. He also locked his keys in the car so he couldn't drive anywhere (good thing!). Sweet tea vodka will bring back bad memories from this point on.

  • 18. BK  |  August 25, 2010 at 6:05 pm

Wait. Is his middle initial really "S."???

  • 19. Dan T.  |  August 25, 2010 at 11:09 am

They can't seem to make up their mind whether their site should be or The .org version would make more logical sense for a noncommercial organization site. (But the same is true for the Prop8TrialTracker site.)

  • 20. Gregory in SLC  |  August 25, 2010 at 11:10 am

The more I hear Brian Brown I wonder why he is fighting for. He says things in the video about supporting families…we are family too! Brian: Ask Matthew Sheppard's mom, ask Mary Griffith(prayers for Bobby)…ask my mom and dad, ask my 9-year old son who is family!

It seems to me this has become a job for Brian and Maggie. I don't see or hear any spark or passion or conviction in there undefined cause. When someone is truly convinced in their righteous cause you can see and feel it. I see none of that in the NOM camp

I'm particularly irked at the way he and other "conservatives" defame/disrespect judge walker. I'm not a student of law but I read his ruling and it is masterful and amazingly detailed.

Bless all you people support all families and persons everywhere. Thank you for standing up for truth and dedicating your time and talents to promote my family.

    With love,

  • 21. Gregory in SLC  |  August 25, 2010 at 11:15 am

sorry about typos…I just get so worked up when I hear/read/smell BB's BS grrrrrrrr

  • 22. Linda  |  August 25, 2010 at 11:26 am

Oh, this is definitely a job for them. They have to report back to their 'employers' just like everyone else; hence this little recap video of BS's. The only difference is, he ends his report with a plea for more money.

  • 24. Ann S.  |  August 25, 2010 at 11:15 am

I noticed that both B. S. Brown and "Dr." Alveda King both disparaged "judges and politicians" who are "trying to impose" something on everyone.

Maybe they haven't heard that they will not be required to participate in a marriage with a same-sex partner??

But seriously, it's much easier to disparage "judges and politicians" than your neighbors, family, friends and co-workers, isn't it?

  • 25. Gregory in SLC  |  August 25, 2010 at 11:16 am

    Precisely!! Well said Ann!

  • 26. Elizabeth Oakes  |  August 25, 2010 at 2:02 pm

Au contraire, Ann–judges and politicians ARE trying to impose something on them, a little number called "The Constitution." But you know, that's just a trifling bit of parchment written by activist Founding Fathers dontcha know, and doesn't compare with their moral assessment of things.

  • 27. Linda  |  August 25, 2010 at 2:53 pm

That's good! Drat those Activist Founding Fathers insisting that the Constitution apply to everyone!

  • 28. Jonathon  |  August 25, 2010 at 11:20 am

Brian Brown is misleading in the video, where he says, "If Judge Walker's ruling is allowed to stand, it will affect marriage all across this country." …or something to that affect. Althought we'd love for that to be true, at this point in time, it's not. And due to the "standing" issue of the Prop 8 folks…it may only be a ruling that affects CA. Of course, it may help other cases…but the ruling itself wouldn't if it goes no further than where it is.

What makes me sick, though, is how they use the victim card…saying how "we are imposing gay marriage onto them"…when it's actually, THEM who is imposing their marriages on us. Whether Prop 8 is in effect or not….they STILL get to marry the one they love. However, due to what THEY have imposed on US…affects us everyday. I just want to scream!!!

  • 29. Jonathon  |  August 25, 2010 at 11:23 am

Sorry for the typos, folks…I just get so furious about all this that I can't seem to type properly. 😛

  • 30. Mark M (Seattle)  |  August 26, 2010 at 1:12 am

That happens to me all the time Jonathon….I'm convinced the people here at P8TT think me the most illiterate poster on here LOL

  • 31. Carpool Cookie  |  August 25, 2010 at 1:32 pm

"What makes me sick, though, is how they use the victim card…saying how “we are imposing gay marriage onto them”…"

I know. The tone of all their statements and the Prop H8 legal briefs is as if heterosexual marriage were being OUTLAWED.

    It's like, Calm down, Mary.

  • 32. Alan E.  |  August 25, 2010 at 11:27 am

"Live Internet broadcast" viewed by about 100 people, most of whom were probably anti-discrimination.

  • 33. Felyx  |  August 25, 2010 at 11:28 am

This video is AWESOME!! The only people who would be duped by this are the people who don't have a clue and are already convinced. I think spreading this video will go a very long way in convincing many unaware persons that the laws need to be changed and that NOM is a discriminatory organization. Anyone looking at this video who would seek further information will be led directly to this site and NOM Tour Tracker.

Thank you Brian for all your hardwork! The more you put this crap out the more supporters we get, the stronger we get and the faster we will achieve our goals!!! Without tapping the GayTM at all you, Brian (and Lois and Maggie), have done more for our cause then we would have done for ourselves. Between NOM and the Defense Interweiners who might be footing the Prop8 attorney's bill, we have had seriously powerful publicity at little or no relative cost to ourselves. Can this get any better? Oh yeah! The Mormon church got such an ass kicking over the whole issue that it has shut down all the anti-gay activity and is now pouring its depleted resources into image advertising! Oh, and the Catholic Church is slowly pulling its adoption services out of several Equality States and its influence is seriously waning.

Once again, thank you NOM for pouring all you time, efforts and resources into spreading our message and rallying society to our cause. Please make more videos… and for the love of Gay God! PLEASE have another Marriage Tour!! It would be a shame if we couldn't get more mileage out of you and that ridiculous bus. The bigger your stink the quicker society will give us what we want just to shut you up!! Hahahahaha!!! Thank you NOM!! Thank you, Thank you, Thank you!!

Sincerely, (no, seriously, I really do mean this!!),

PS: When you are done with the bus can we have it? I bet our marriage rallies would bring in a huge onslaught of supporters and just about no anti-civil rights protesters. (Seriously, give us the bus… with all the money you are pouring our way, this would be the one opportunity to get a tax deduction!!!)

  • 34. Straight Grandmother  |  August 25, 2010 at 12:36 pm

You haven't posted much lately I know you are recovering from your surgery, but this topic got you motivated I see. Hope you are doing better.

I totally agree with you thier pathetic #FAIL Tour did nothing but galvinate us and make us more motivated and it didn't attract hardly anybody on thier side. RThe only time they had any numbers at all was when they bussed them in from out of state in Washington DC. That minister brought in his congregation.

  • 35. Colin  |  August 25, 2010 at 11:34 am

Fabrications? Where does one begin? Their entire platform is a fabrication of mistruth, reliant on ignorance and driven by an age old money making scheme that exploits people's "faith-based" fear.
I am suddenly beginning to reach the conclusion that the prop 8 side is actually trying to NOT get their case to the Supreme Court. It would actually be better for them if it didn't. Just a reasonable amount of scrutiny reveals how weak their fabricated position is:
    1.They are NOT victims.
    2. There is no ATTACK on "traditional marriage" that can be reasonably inferred from the act of same sex couples obtaining civil marriage licenses, and therefore there exists no state interest in specifically denying same sex marriages that can stand up to the facts….
    3. …..The facts, oh yeah, their facts are things they create and repeat incessantly for which to nourish to their unthinking cash crop's ignorance. But their facts don't pass the test under oath in a court of law, when what little professional or academic credibility they have is on the line. For this should be obvious from their action to compel the courts not to allow video evidence of their fallacious floundering (but of course they would have you think that it was for their protection from the senseless equality mongers). Which leads us right back to #1, and round and round we go.
No, they will be better off not facing the scrutiny of the modern-day Supreme Court. And wouldn't a denial of appeal be just the thing to get their cash crop flowing again? After all, Brian is really focused on those "battleground states." Once SCOTUS rules same sex marriage to be a right just like all others, there will be no more battleground, and that is what he, Maggie, and all the rest live for.

  • 36. Marlene  |  August 25, 2010 at 10:16 pm

Remember, Colin is that this is the *same* kind and tenor of fearmongering when the bans on interracial marriage were struck down in '67 with the Loving decision.

The bigots and the racists were claiming the end of civilization now that blacks and whites could marry!

With the current wave of manufactured bigotry and hate against the proposed Islamic center in NYC, not to mention Glenn Dreck's "freedom rally" tomorrow, these well-connected fascists are the biggest threat to the Constitution since the Civil War.

This needs to stop and stop now… in a non-violent manner, of course!! I hope the people who protested against the NOMbie rally go back and protest against Dreck's little dog-and-pony show, and show those teabaggers what *real* patriotism is!

  • 37. JonT  |  August 25, 2010 at 11:35 am

    Ok, some comments:

    – BB:"We had no idea how big it would become".

I Love the psuedo-nazi drum march as they 'introduce' the satanic-homo protesters (us). Made me want to stand up and give a nazi salute (where's Ronnie when you need him? 🙂

"The bus tour showed the true face of those who would impose SSM on our nation." (Cue the 'angry', intimidating gays).

Oh boy. I didn't realize we were trying to force straight people to marry members of their own gender. Didn't see our gay attack dogs though… Maybe they make a cameo appearance in a future propaganda piece?

    – Yes, you're right they are really playing up the RI protest. And sorry NOMos, but your "marriage supporters" are bigots. Just accept that and move on.

    – "Dr." Alveda King, the sellout, is featured as a 'powerful' voice for preserving marriage. Uh huh.

    – BB: "We've been called to stand up for and defend this institution…"

Translation, we are being paid a butt-load of cash to hate on all you homos. Ha Ha.

    – It was interesting in each of their camera shots, there was no empty space. Made it look like all of their venues were just packed with people defending primarily old, white, christianists against the evil gay anti-family hoards.

And to be honest, the constant victim-hood is kinda pissing me off. I'm still waiting to read about the nomo killed by his parents for acting too 'nomo-y', or the teenagers commiting suicide in their closets because all of their school-mates are calling them nomos.

They're just power and money grubbing scumbags IMO.

  • 38. Gregory in SLC  |  August 25, 2010 at 12:02 pm

Thank you Felix, Colin and Jon — I was teetering toward feeling depressed by the video…and your comments help put this is better perspective and brought smiles and hearty laughter — just what I needed! thanks again 🙂

  • 39. JonT  |  August 25, 2010 at 12:20 pm

Thanks Gregory. You know, I don't get depressed or bummed out at these guys anymore. Oh, I'll comment and complain and generally dis them at every opportunity, but they do not hurt me. They cannot, unless I let them.

Felyx has a point, the more they talk, the more obvious their bigotry and ignorance becomes.

And the more obvious their bigotry and ignorance, the better for us in the long run.

    Keep making the vids BB!

  • 40. Straight Grandmother  |  August 25, 2010 at 12:29 pm

JohnT quoted from the video, "“The bus tour showed the true face of those who would impose SSM on our nation.”

I do not think WE are IMPOSING Gender Neutral Marriage on anybody. In fact I don't think we are even imposing marriage on anybody. We are not forcing hetrosexauls into shotgun weddings with GLBTs. We are not imposing marriage on anybody.

  • 41. JonT  |  August 25, 2010 at 12:49 pm

SG: You are right, we aren't forcing anything on them, well, other than the elimination of state-sponsored bigotry.

But it's so much easier to solicit donations (and a bit-o-hate) if you can frame the issue in terms of: "'them' forcing 'their' ways upon us."

Of course that's not true, but… they're marketing folks 🙂

  • 42. Straight Grandmother  |  August 25, 2010 at 1:09 pm

Well on second thought, I think I would like to Impose a shotgun wedding. With shotguns (figuratively) to their heads I would like to see Maggie H8tro Gallagher marry Larry Craig, or if she is unwilling then George Reekers, and if he won't hold his nose and do it, then Roy Ashburn.

As long as I am accused of imposing people to get married let's have a double ceremony and Brian marries Louis. Oh and the two security old farts in the yellow shirts from the #FAIL NOM Tour, yeah they can be the flower girls.

  • 43. Carpool Cookie  |  August 25, 2010 at 1:35 pm

"…those who would impose SSM on our nation."

Somehow, I always see S&M when they use "SSM".

    Is that intentional??

  • 44. JonT  |  August 25, 2010 at 1:45 pm

'Somehow, I always see S&M when they use “SSM”.'

My bad CC, they used the phrase "same sex marriage" in the video, which I abbreviated to SSM. I should have enclosed that in brackets '[]' to make it clear.

Didn't mean to mislead. As opposed to NOM's intentions. 🙂

  • 45. Kathleen  |  August 25, 2010 at 2:00 pm

If they're imposing something it's more likely DS, not SM. Sheesh let's get our acronyms straight.

  • 46. Elizabeth Oakes  |  August 25, 2010 at 2:11 pm

Less DS and more wanking, by the looks of this video.

  • 47. Alan E.  |  August 25, 2010 at 11:49 am

We don't want those against gender neutral marriages to be silenced. We want them to be informed. It may mean they have to actually be quiet and listen from time to time, but repeating the same lines and arguments that are baseless (except in the bible which does not dictate law) makes them just sheeple. And that makes me sad that so many people can't take the time to think for themselves.

  • 48. Paul in Minneapolis  |  August 25, 2010 at 12:03 pm

They claim we don't want to debate?

We've been practically begging to debate this issue with them for years! Pleading for them to give us one — just one! — cogent, coherent, secular argument against same-sex marriage that we can't refute!

What's that? NOM's idea of "debate" is that they pick all the questions and do all the talking? They reject the debate that happened in Judge Walker's courtroom?

    Never mind….

  • 49. JonT  |  August 25, 2010 at 12:23 pm

Yeah Paul. We had this trial thingy. Guess that wasn't a good enough debate for them.

NOM’s idea of “debate” is that they pick all the questions and do all the talking?

Yup, pretty much. That's the only way they can win. 🙂

  • 59. Straight Grandmother  |  August 25, 2010 at 12:10 pm

The word that jumped right out at me was Intolerance my jaw hit the floor. At least teice and maybe 3 times, Brian S Brown the Biggest Bigot in America, acused the GLBT counter protestors as being Intolerant. Last time I checked LLB was tolerant of hetro marriage, aren't you LLB? I know Fiona is as she is married to a guy, and JonT you are not protesting that hetros should not be permitted to marry are you? I am pretty sure by reading the posts of Rebecca, Andrew, Kathleen, Sagesse, RAW, Alan E, DPeck that all of them ARE tolerant of hetrosexuals being able to legally marry.
So what are we intolerant about? We are surely all in favor of two hetrosexuals who wnat to marry to be able to do that.

Ohhh maybe we are Intolerent of being DISCRIMINATED against. We tolerate their marriages just FINE. It is NOM and their supporters who are INTOLERENT!

That lie right there p*sses me off. I am going to go back and listen again but I know he said this at least twice. "Look at the gays and lesbians how Intolerent they are." As Ronnie would say, STFU!!! Brian S Brown the Biggest Bigot in American and Maggie H8ter Gallagher are eveil, pure evil. But Bless thier heart…

It was a summer of marriage tour right? All of US are FOR marriage, marriage for ALL, I don't call that Intolerent.

We are not intolerant, we're inclussive.

What a bunch of drama queens!

  • 64. JonT  |  August 25, 2010 at 12:31 pm

…and JonT you are not protesting that hetros should not be permitted to marry are you?

I certainly am not. But they know that. If I were trying to subvert or eliminate their rights, it makes it much easier to brand me the enemy.

I must admit to being a little intolerant of attempts to push me back into a self-hating closet. Of that, I will admit my guilt.

But yeah, SG, you are correct. I wonder if BB has read 1984. Redefining language (and reframing the discussion) is a key aspect of their propaganda.

Facts are their enemy. Facts are our friends 🙂

    That's how we win.

    Translation for Brian:

    Facts: Double plus good
    NOM: Double plus ungood

  • 67. Paul in Minneapolis  |  August 25, 2010 at 12:40 pm

You're absolutely right. They are evil.

Every last thing they do is intentional. Nothing they do is without thought (as opposed to thoughtless). No mean to their oppressive, theocratic end is beneath them.

They know that they're lying, spinning, misrepresenting. They have long conversations among themselves to justify their methods, their hatred, their condescension and their willful misinterpretation of facts.

They call themselves "Christians" to convince people, themselves not the least among them, that they do "God's work" while ignoring the very teachings they claim as central to their "work."

They are a loathsome group of hypocrites committing despicable acts against their fellow human beings in the name of their deity. Only the ignorant and the foolish could not detest them. And the forgiving, as many of you are (but not I; not for NOM).

As an atheist, I do not believe in divine retribution. But I do believe in karma. Everyone, eventually, gets what they deserve. I fervently hope I live to see the day that karma kicks NOM in the teeth!

  • 68. Kate  |  August 25, 2010 at 12:45 pm

Yeah….. like when Anita Bryant led such a vicious anti-gay fight some years ago, and then her son came out to her. Haven't heard a peep from her since, although I kinda doubt she's busy attending PFLAG meetings……..

  • 69. Paul in Minneapolis  |  August 25, 2010 at 12:46 pm

So that's why Anita wears dentures….

  • 70. Kate  |  August 25, 2010 at 12:48 pm

OK … my ignorance is showing. Does she wear dentures 'cuz she dropped her teeth when her son came out?

  • 71. Paul in Minneapolis  |  August 25, 2010 at 12:49 pm

Or because that's where karma kicked her…!

    : )

  • 72. Kate  |  August 25, 2010 at 12:50 pm

    Ah! Gotcha.

  • 73. Straight Grandmother  |  August 25, 2010 at 12:56 pm

@Kate, For real? Anita Bryant's son is gay? He told her that? I don't even know if she is still alive. That is soooooo Rightious.

  • 74. Carpool Cookie  |  August 25, 2010 at 1:45 pm

I had heard that rumor…is it documented anywhere? (Linky-link?)

I've actually been reflecting that it's strange she hasn't come out with any statements in any of this. If she wanted a new base and to spiff up her image, you'd think she'd make some appearances SOMEWHERE as to how she regrets the past, and is tolerant of homosexuals now.

The latest line of argument I've read from her defenders is she was just doing what her husband told her.

  • 75. Kathleen  |  August 25, 2010 at 1:57 pm

Found this article about Anita Bryant from early last year:

  • 76. Richard A. Walter (s  |  August 25, 2010 at 10:09 pm

Last I heard, someone here posted a link about Anita appearing at some "save the family" crusade in Oklahoma City during the same time frame as the NOM Summer of Hate tour.

  • 77. Paul in Minneapolis  |  August 25, 2010 at 12:43 pm

I believe that in my above post, central to their "faith" would be more accurate.

You know waht I am jsut going to post away. As soon as I hit the Submit button I think of something else. Is anyone surprised that they featured so prominently Dr. Alveda King? The turncoat relative of the emminent Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. who is no PhD. Her "Honorary" Doctoret was "bestowed" on her by a college that does nto even have ANY doctorate programs. I am darned sure that all of 16 people showed up in Atlanta to hear her hate message. Wooooo let's call that stop a roaring success Brian S Brown the Biggest Bigot in America. #FAIL

Yes SG, this view of their scam is particularly irritating. Post your heart out!

  • 82. Carpool Cookie  |  August 25, 2010 at 1:50 pm

Seriously, it almost just made me cry to remember that woman is Coretta Scott King's daughter. Mrs. King would be rolling over in her grave right now.

But then, children of celebrities are usually somewhat lost.

  • 83. Elizabeth Oakes  |  August 25, 2010 at 2:17 pm

To be truthful, I feel sorry for her. She's just trying to be somebody great, like others in her family, and this was the best she could do. It's sad, really.

  • 84. Richard A. Walter (s  |  August 25, 2010 at 10:10 pm

Actually, Carpool Cookie, Velveeta King is Coretta's niece.

  • 85. Dpeck  |  August 26, 2010 at 2:35 am

Awesome!! : ) Although I was really looking forward to reading the final installation of 'Bus' when the FAIL tour was ending, now that the stay is in effect until December I'm wondering if it would be possible to keep the 'Bus' episodes coming until then? They are definitely a highlight of this site.

  • 99. JonT  |  August 25, 2010 at 12:57 pm

    Yes! And Anonygrl?

I'd love for you to work in the following BB phrase from the video into it if you could: "We had no idea how big it would become…"

  • 103. anonygrl  |  August 25, 2010 at 12:50 pm

Pulling 3 minutes of highlights from more than 30 hours of footage is no small task, especially when you cannot actually feature any of your speakers because their messages primarily conflicted with your own of supporting marriage, not trying to ban same sex couples from it. Brian, you did not pull 3 minutes of highlights. You pulled 29 seconds of Alveda King going on about practically nothing, and a six second sound bite from Reverend Coles that doesn't particularly mean anything to you as it is not anything about supporting traditional marriage, and doesn't particularly damage us because it is simply not true and everyone knows it.

You go on to say that we hope you will feel "cowed and silenced and bullied into doing nothing…" You know that is not true. We hope, against hope, that because we are standing up to your discrimination that your followers will be inspired to do the right thing, and will join us to stand up for all people's rights, not just the little circle of religious beliefs that you are pushing in the hopes of discriminating against people who have done nothing more to you than to stand up for those rights in the face of your attempted oppression. We hope that they will stand up for our families, and our children, and our love, which is no different from yours.

We do not want to change your marriage. We do not want to change your religion. We do not even want to change your world! If you want to wear your blinders and live in your enclaves, carry on! Preach what you will in your churches. Believe what you will in your homes. Simply stop trying to force those beliefs on us. We don't want them, we don't follow them, and we are not buying them.

Fortunately, the greater part of the rest of the world isn't buying them either. And younger generations who are being raised to be more open minded, thoughtful and less prejudiced only continue that growing trend.

I was in Washington DC, Brian. You didn't have 300 supporters. You didn't have 200 supporters. You might just have cleared 100, but that count included you, and Louis, and all the staff you had, and a few of the reporters who were not particularly supportive of you. And that was in NOM's home town, with MONTHS to plan for it.

Your 2M4M idea is not a new one, it is a rehash of the one that failed and continues to fail. The facts are that you gathered a total of 1,274 supports to your events on your ENTIRE 23 city tour, for an average of 55 people per stop. Do your funders know how much a customized tour bus and van costs? Do they realize the cost of you and Maggie flying in and out of the tour? Have you told them about the added cost of rental cars and daily expenses? Have they figured that the price of hotel rooms and meals on this fiasco means that if you got donations of $25 from every single person who came to see you, infants, staff, speakers and yourselves (at every stop) included, you would still have lost money on this tour by the bucket load?

Do your supporters further realize that we drew 3,419 people to protest against you, to share their stories, to make a joyful noise and to let the world know that we are strong, confident people, deserving of the same rights you would deny us for reasons that do not now, nor have they ever, applied to the laws of this country? Do they also know that we did all that with only weeks of planning, through grass roots local organizations, and with only one rental car and three people on the road?

And have they noticed that by and large, the majority of the press garnered on this tour favors equality? Because I have noticed that. I suppose then that we should be thanking you heartily for encouraging us, providing us the impetus, the structure and the platform to get our word out there.

And even if you do get 2 million people to sign up, unlikely as that seems, do you know that you are in a fight that you cannot win? And do you know why? It is because you are trying to take away rights. You are trying to legislate on your beliefs, and those beliefs are discriminatory. You are, despite your claims of trying to support marriage, doing more harm to the institution by your very claims that it is not strong enough to tolerate MORE participants, ones who love their partners, and their children, and who only want to have what they deserve, and that, my friend, is equality.

  • 104. Kate  |  August 25, 2010 at 12:55 pm

Oh, Anonygrl, this is beautiful. How I wish there were a way that Brian et al could actually be made to read it. We may have to tie them to chairs first, but then you could read it to them. After we've first made them listen to Kathleen reading Walker's decision!

  • 105. Jonathon  |  August 25, 2010 at 1:01 pm

    I second that! 🙂

  • 106. anonygrl  |  August 25, 2010 at 1:03 pm

I just emailed it to NOM. Not that it will do much good, but someone there will have to read it on the off chance that I am proposing to send them money.

  • 107. anonygrl  |  August 25, 2010 at 1:04 pm

That is a brilliant idea Kate. Lets make sure we fill the room with families and children, LGBT and straight allies, who will just sit there and look at them as they are forced to listen to the decision.

  • 108. Elizabeth Oakes  |  August 25, 2010 at 2:23 pm

They can read? Because from the way they "read" their biblical texts, I'd say they're faking it.

  • 109. Elizabeth Oakes  |  August 25, 2010 at 2:24 pm

And Walker's decision, too. Low comprehension in both cases.

  • 110. anonygrl  |  August 25, 2010 at 12:57 pm

I am looking for Brian's email… but not seeing it? I want to email this to him. In fact, I think if we have his email address, we should all continue to email all of our thoughtful, reasoned responses directly to him. Daily. Every time we post one here. Every single time. And if he changes his email, we should send it to NOM. Daily. Perhaps both.

    What do you think?

  • 111. Kate  |  August 25, 2010 at 1:04 pm

He won't read it. No way would any of them read something long from the opposition. They only chance you'd have of getting something read it if it is very concise and catches their eye before they realize it's from "us." Hey, maybe something like Walker did when he lifted the stay and we were all cheering and then zap, he actually zinged US at the end by leaving it in place a few days.

  • 112. Kate  |  August 25, 2010 at 1:13 pm

Maybe something they'd be forced to accidentally read something short like this:

Dear Mr. Brown: [so he'll think we're fans]

As I attended several of the NOM tour gatherings, I thought you might welcome corrections to several unfortunate errors made in your video. I offer one of those here and will be happy to assist you in correcting the other mistakes in the video, as I know that complete honesty is so important to your organization. [barf, barf — but he's stupid enough to fall for it]

•Number of equality supporters, as hand-counted by 3,419
•Number of NOM supporters, as hand-counted by 1,274

Looking forward to helping you more,

It's hard not for me to often be seething after living through decades of this hateful and completely illogical [email protected] alongside the rest of my generation…and I admire that you can turn out something like that.

    Fabulous job!

  • 126. fiona64  |  August 26, 2010 at 1:47 am

You haven't lived until you hear Franc d'Ambrosio sing the "Chitty Chitty Bang Bang" theme in Italian. It's part of his "Hollywood" cabaret show.

(Plus, he's a really nice guy.)

    I'm just sayin' …

  • 127. fiona64  |  August 26, 2010 at 1:48 am

PS to *everyone* – please check Franc's calendar on the link I provided. If he's coming to a town near you, go to whatever show it is. Seriously. I've seen all three of his shows now, and each one is brilliant.

Not sure who he is? He's the longest-running Phantom of the Opera, and he was Al Pacino's opera-singing son in "Godfather III."

No, I don't work for him. But he is a heckuva nice guy, and very supportive of my husband's acting and singing efforts.

Like we have here : )

  • 129. anonygrl  |  August 25, 2010 at 10:38 pm

No, I was three when it came out originally… but I guess it must have been Mom who somehow showed it to us. Did it have a later theatrical re-release, perhaps? I am sure I can't remember the first time I saw it.

One thing that struck me about his video is his premise that what gays and lesbians want is "tolerance for their lifestyle"! I don't know a single gay person who is interested in tolerance. That is nothing but condescension by another name.

  • 132. elliom  |  August 25, 2010 at 9:09 pm

    Brian just doesn't get it.

    We don't want tolerance.

    We want acceptance.

  • 133. anonygrl  |  August 25, 2010 at 10:38 pm

I don't care whether Brian EVER accepts me.

    I just want equal rights.

  • 134. Cat  |  August 25, 2010 at 2:39 pm

I still can't watch BBtheBrownSuit… Just thinking about his lies, damn lies and turn-out statistics makes me cringe. As an antidote I did read this article:

It's about the role of the historians that backed the Plaintiff's case against Prop.8. Nice reading, makes you feel time is on our side. Hurray for history professors!

  • 135. elliom  |  August 25, 2010 at 9:12 pm

Brian uses statistics the way a drunk uses a lamp post: for support instead of illumination.

[Borrowed quote. Twain maybe? Sounds sufficiently "Twain"y]

guys & gals sorry havn't been here 4 a bit i am a avid horse rider and been so busy trying to find a ways for my wife and i to get a sponsor for her so we can go home we have a house, framily with grand children that are suffering without us being there. I think we all need to make a video of all the discriminatory remarks that he made and why one of our people was yelling at the speaker and show footage of their own speaker that was actually on our side lmao that would really rock!!! We can post it on their site i bet they wont realize it 4 several days or at least post a link to it. We also think we should all post there and say things like Brian S u r full of BS ur eyes must be brown lol na seriously if we go on the site and say why did u lie to everyone? We are for marriage!!! Marriage 4 all!! Brian we will pray for you to finally see the light our God does not codify bigotry and spue lies hatemongers will not ener the kingdom of God. If we r truely children of God we are to LOVE one another unconditionally and have equal rights for all!!! If those whom are sinning need guidence let God handle it and trust me she will!!! Hope all ur days r good we seriously need to go there and get people to see we r not like the way were portrayed!!

  • 138. Shelly & Simie 4  |  August 25, 2010 at 8:53 pm

seriously my wife is getting a b2 visa and we need a sponsor for her until she has money in the bank from the house she sold. We have money but we are not sure if the embassy would require more and there is a 2 month waiting list. If anyone we do not care who is willing to sponsor her all that person needs to do is say that they are financially stable, show bank account, tax returns, house deeds or something like that to show that She would be takin care of if needed. But we wont need it it's just there 2 show the embassy and the person would send the letter of sponsorship in a sealed envelope. So we can get the process started i have a health condition that I have to see my dr. so i can obtain my medication for health reasons. But i wont go without my wife. so please pm us we have our email here get to know us and then decide. We are a binational couple i am a u.s. citizen and my wife is italain. We will be looking forward to talking with you!!!!

  • 139. anonygrl  |  August 25, 2010 at 10:45 pm

I'm confused about the B2 visa… one of the conditions is that

You have a permanent residence in your home country that you have no intention of abandoning

How can you show that if she sold her house?

  • 140. Sagesse  |  August 25, 2010 at 11:32 pm

A reasonably balanced article on whether the state of CA should have defended Prop 8. Can't say I agree with the conclusion, however. The CA ballot intitiative process allows practically anything to be put to a vote, as legislattion or an amendment to the state constitution. With no ability to screen for constitutionality in advance, there will be some measures that don't merit defending. Besides, if the Proponents couldn't come up with a defense, how was the state going to do better?

Brown and Schwarzenegger don't have to defend Prop. 8 — but they should

  • 141. Ann S.  |  August 26, 2010 at 2:30 am

I have to say that I have a certain sympathy to the point of view expressed in that editorial — that for the very state government that the electorate is going around by enacting a proposition to then subvert the process by refusing to defend it undermines the proposition system.

But I find our proposition system so badly flawed, and to produce so many bad laws, that I guess I don't care if it gets undermined and subverted.

    And in other news…

Bush's 2004 campaign chief and former RNC chair Ken Mehlman has finally come out, after years of rumors:
He has the nerve to wonder "why gay voters never formed common cause with Republican opponents of Islamic jihad, which he called "the greatest anti-gay force in the world right now." Maybe because the Republicans have been demonizing gay people for years and using same-sex marriage as a wedge issue in election after election? Not sure exactly how this relates to the current SSM debate except maybe something about cynicism, hypocrisy, and mind-blowing duplicity on one side of this issue…

OMG! I would love to see someone with talent and time take this video and use footage from the NOMTracker cameras instead of BB's footage. How funny would that be? Especially when he is so emphatically proud of his NOM supporters (video: sign with two nooses)…someone PLEASE edit a new version for NOM!!! ;=)

I'm intrigued that in the end of the video he calls for his viewers to become "activists". Isn't that the bad word they used for Judge Walker?

LOL…but Judy, they are allowed to call themselves whatever they want, call other people whatever they way. Define their lives for everybody else….but we are wrong & not allowed to when we call them Bigots & Fascists for being Bigots & Fascists…. He is such an annoying waste of oxygen & space w/that ugly Brown Suit…. <3…Ronnie

I was surprised by how _tired_ Brian sounds in this video. I don't hear passion in his delivery, more a sense of resignation.

Ok, so I"m way late to this thread but I have seen the video…& all I have to say is that this is the disgusting, repugnant, deplorable art of the Nazi Propaganda Machine at its finest….Brian Brown is, with out a doubt, a 21st Century Hitler wannabe… >i …Ronnie
