NOM’s latest mailer: Typo in first line, goes downhill from there
September 30, 2010
Let’s hope NOM’s streak of failing to oust pro-equality candidates continues. Also, if you haven’t seen the new NOMexposed site because of site problems when it launched, click on the banner above. -Adam

NOM and direct mail: They sure “knows” how to exploit kids/fear/foliage:
*SOURCE: NOM uses kids to attack pro-marriage Maine candidates [Equality Maine]
Marriage in fear quotes? The idea that NOM is part of Maine’s “special way of life,” even while sending the mailer from their DC address? NOM asking voters to fill up representatives’ personal emails with either praise or condemnation? Chatter about kids that become part of the next generation, while completely overlooking the fact — THE FACT! — that a portion of those kids will be LGBT? Light pink roses for a fall wedding?!
Ugh. Sorry, trees that had to die to for this astroturfed silliness.

I "knows" that marriage equality will be the law of the land. It is only a matter of time, and not so very much time at that. Read it and weep, NOM.

Most printers won't proofread. They just take your work that the customer signs off on and just print.
21.
Kate | September 30, 2010 at 7:15 am
Agreed. (Having printed a lot in my past.) If the customer wants additional proofreading after their camera-ready copy is laid out, they need to pay for it.

I've been lucky with my printers. Perhaps it's because I pay half their staff salary, but they have found errors and notified me – saving my clients hundreds of thousands of dollars in reprinting.
I do make my clients sign off on proofs before going to print : )

Stopping gays from marrying won't help people get a job, people would rather donate to a candidate who will get people working again.
Wasting money on preventing people for shacking up isn't adding up.

I kept looking at the couple playing in the leaves with their kids and thinking, "Either they aren't married but have two kids, or Mary chose not to take Brad's name. Either way, I'm confused."
Then I realized I really was confused. "Brad" Watts and "Mary" Schiavoni are not the couple playing in the leaves, they are the morons at the bottom right.

Anonygrl | September 30, 2010 at 3:45 am
That confused me too… here is this family who are obviously not married, based on the names, but are supporting traditional marriage? How does that work, exactly?
Then I saw on the reverse side that Linda Valentino and Donald Pilon supported same sex marriage, and I thought "Oh, good! Now people will know who they SHOULD vote for."
I think we should do as NOM asks, and flood Watts' and Shiavoni's email with our discontent. Perhaps if they get enough negative email (and we should mention NOM IN the email) they will tell NOM to knock it the hell off and stop helping.

Mainers live in a bubble, they'll fall for it.
Anyone remember YEARS ago when Burger King came out with the Whaler Sandwich?
Mainers got together and protested the use of whale meat. It took an actual ad campaign to inform the public that "the Whaler Sandwich" was just the name of the sandwich, it was a burger.

Is it my imagination, or are the kids poorly photo-shopped into the picture? I’m guessing the older kid is a boy — but his head looks too big. Whose hands are under his right cheek & what are they holding onto? Is the boy wearing *gasp* PINK?!
It’s not just the first typo. The rest of the paragraph is poorly written, as well.

Does anyone know if there has been another word in any dictionary that so much money has been spent on? I wonder how much money has been spent on the word 'marriage'.
When did the fundies first start adding the word 'traditional' in front of it?
I think if they really want "traditional marriage' they should add it to their marriage certificates…

A bit OT, but wanted to pass this along. As we all recall from the NOM Summer Against Marriage Tour, there was that guy with his sign showing the best solution for LGBT people was by hanging them. Well, just reading a story on a Christian news site concerning the Indianapolis bakery that had refused to bake rainbow-topped cupcakes for a gay pride event because that would be obscene and against their family values, and found this in the comments section:
<>
http://www.onenewsnow.com/Culture/Default.aspx?id…

52% is overwhelming? Seriously, NOM, have you ever *looked* at a dictionary?
"marriage"
"discrimination"
"bigot"
"intolerance"
"overwhelmingly"
They have no idea what any of those mean!
72.
Mark M (Seattle) | September 30, 2010 at 6:48 am

"It's not discrimination to treat different things differently"
π

Maggie Gallagher Srivastav, who discriminates to the point that she ignores her Hindu husband completely… but just because she treats him like sh*t doesn’t mean she discriminates against him or the children he fathered upon her.
“It’s not discrimination to treat different things differently.”
Is this her way of telling us she is living a lie?
74.
Lodi Gal | September 30, 2010 at 6:42 am
I was at the Stockton stop this morning. The biggest crowd yet according to some of the folks tracking the tour. Maybe 20 or so people showed up with their pastor from a Spanish speaking fundamentalist church. They offered the standard garbage about the world going to hell and if we allow same-sex unions, then people will want to marry children, farm animals, whatever.
75.
Anonygrl | September 30, 2010 at 6:49 am
Yes… please tell them that if same sex marriage is allowed, their children are going to want to marry farm animals. Then explain to them that they can inform their children that this will still be illegal. Of course, when their children turn SIX they are going to want to marry the Genie from Alladin, and when they are SEVEN they are going to want to marry the Queen of England… and when they are EIGHT they are going to want to marry Max from Where the Wild Things Are…
And these fundamentalist church folk really need to get over it.
76.
Kate | September 30, 2010 at 7:02 am
Ah, so this is how they came up with the adjective "awesome" for the Stockton stop. I guess Alfonso got on the phone and started calling local churches before their arrival……..

Besides the tracker crew, a couple from Tracy and I were the only "opposition". No Boxer signs. The NOM bunch and the fundies were the majority.

If all of the Latinos, who are your target audience, are busy at work….why are you there and who did you think you would be talking to????
82.
Lodi Gal | September 30, 2010 at 6:56 am
These were some of the least educated and simplest Fundie Folks I've ever met, and I've met a lot of those types.
What was really stunning, was that at first it didn't look like anyone was going to show up for the "rally", so the NOM advance people started handing out propaganda fans and literature to a group of developmentally disabled adults in the park who were part of a day program. This was going to be their "big crowd" for the day.
83.
Ann S. | September 30, 2010 at 6:59 am

I was just reading this report. I'm no fan of his, nor do I think flippant references to suicide are okay, but I don't see how we can assume this tweet is about gay men. It could just as likely be about (straight) men who won't pleasure their ladies. In fact, there's a large subset of macho men who think it somehow makes them less manly to do so and that could be what he's referring to.

Just to chime in with Lodi Gal, I have to admit I'm terribly ashamed that my back yard had the largest attendance yet! But, I also caught all the sound bites that said Boxer didn't vote for or voted against "your" values. No one will ever say why or what was in the bills that were not good. It was interesting that the church members were brought in, but evidently not told exactly what the deal was. . .kinda like Karyme not knowing the truth about NOM. I'm glad I got to meet our TT crew (AWESOME, guys!), and Lodi Gal, too! . . . 'HI' to Kate and her chickens!

Using a plastic cake topper to represent two gay men (and all of gay people), classy. Because if those were two actual men you might actually feel like these are humans we’re talking about and therefor worth some careful consideration.
What about the ‘bride dragging the groom to the altar’ cake toppers? How would they feel about that representing all of their marriages instead of that delightful family pile?
The only message they have conveyed to their constituents. “All your cakes are belong to us. ” – The gays.

Someone would pay 40 dollars to have strangling cake toppers? Well, my frugal side is crying out, but hey as long as it's accurately portraying their relationship this cake topper at least serves a purpose.
When I get married to my lady I want a cake topper of Captain Janeway and Seven of Nine from Star Trek Voyager. And everyone will be required to wear uniforms. Oh yeah, gay marriage is going to go boldly where only smattering of geeky couples have gone before.

Have they still not disclosed their donors? They were under court order to do so, weren't they?

They also did not obtain the permission or consent of one of the candidates who, by the way, noticed the error too.

Well, now I know who I’m voting for!
I should email NOM and thank them for informing me as to which representatives support gay marriage.
Maine had NO SUCH overwhelming vote. It was 51% to 49% and if organisations like NOM hadn’t lied and deceived people, we would have gay marriage in Maine.
When they were collecting signatures, I was told if I didn’t sign the their petition I wouldn’t be allowed to vote. It was as if I had to register through them to vote at all. Once it was on the ballet their commercials implied that children would be taught about gay sex in Kindergarten.

The EXACT same thing that happened in Ca. in 2008!!
If it was not for the LIES that NOM told we would also have marriage equality. NOM =Nut jobs on meth!

I LOVE the DC address. I think it’s pretty well known that K Street NW in DC is lobbyist hell. NOTHING coming out of there has any credibility with the real world. The BS is so deep on K St, that the District has foregone street cleaning. It’s a far cry from Maine.

Let me ask this…
Here in Maine we are experiencing what a lot of other states are experiencing-huge deficit and the possibility of more programs being cut. If there are candidates out there who you think can address that but are against marriage equality and candidates that are for marriage equality but seem to have the same old tires policies that got us where we are now, what do you do? For whom do you vote?

I don't have that dilemma because the ones who are against marriage equality have also never seemed to me to have any answers to our fiscal problems that I believed in, either.
