L’shana tova

Community/Meta

By Adam Bink

I’m offline today to observe the Jewish holiday of Rosh Hashanah, which doubles as new year for the Jews. That means tashlich (the throwing of sins, metaphorically using bread, into a moving body of water to cleanse oneself) as well as prayer and consuming honey in wishing for a sweet new year. For those of you observing, l’shana tova! (happy new year!)

This is an open thread. Regular posting will resume tomorrow. For fun, enjoy this behind the scenes video of our flashmob targeting Michele Bachmann:

Kathleen, I think you posted the wrong link to the mootness reply. The link you posted was actually the governments suggestion for mootness. I think you meant to post a link about LCR's reply to the Governments mootness suggestion but you may have pasted the wrong link!

    And Happy new year Adam!

Thanks for letting me know, MichGuy. This should be the correct link:

Oh crap. I didn't know he did a video for the call to his mom, too. All I knew was that everyone in his family was aware. I will need to watch this one at home with an entire box of tissues.

Breaking: anti-gay N.C. Senator Forrester falsifies credentials – and an open letter to the lawmaker http://pamshouseblend.firedoglake.com/2011/09/29/

"Equality supporter Scott Rose has written an open letter to the Senator, and exposes the fact that Forrester, also a physician, lied repeatedly during that broadcast — and is also peddling false credentials about his qualifications. The Blend has the correspondence with the American College of Preventive Medicine, where Forrester claims to be a Fellow. Let’s just say the ACPM was not happy to hear what the lawmaker is pimping about himself."

(me)Woah this letter is not only strong but blunt as well… I love it…. <3…Ronnie

I was especially struck by his mom's comment that she is worried for her son's "spiritual welfare." What a cruel crime against humanity that we have a religious tradition that has convinced so many well meaning people that their loved ones will burn in hell for all eternity simply for loving another human being! After coming out to mom 16 years ago, I really feel for her now. Imagine if your believed that your son would never see you in heaven. I blamed her for so long because she kept telling me that homosexuality is a sin, but how do I put her at peace when to her, I'm a dead soul walking. I hope that some day soon, that "tradition" will be given the same regard as the Gods of Olympus, or Thor.

Sadly, you may not be able to put your mom at peace. Some people are so blinded by the belief system impressed on them that they cannot break free, which is sad, but happens all too frequently.

The way I see it, those folks who disown their children, or think them to be doomed, and who spend the rest of their lives with that anger or pain in their souls, are living in their own hell here on earth. The saddest part is that this is a hell that they CAN, albeit with some work, climb out of, if only they could make the choice to open their eyes and see the way out. The tragedy is that many of them choose not to escape their own hell, but to rather attempt to drag others down into it with them.

The "dragging others down" can take many forms — I was recently speaking with a neighbor about a local political issue, and it came out that her husband passed away earlier this year and donated his body to science.

She got calls after he passed away saying that her husband would "never go to heaven" because he had donated his body.

Who in their right mind calls a grieving widow to say something like that????

Luckily she seemed able to laugh it off, but I can imagine that it must have been disturbing to her at the time.

UPDATE: A three judge panel has denied the government’s motion to declare the LCR lawsuit moot and to vacate the suit. That means the lawsuit goes on.
