Illinois marriage equality ruling expected today

LGBT Legal Cases Marriage equality Marriage Equality Trials

Illinois state sealA quick update out of Illinois: according to the Chicago Sun-Times, a Cook County state judge is expected to rule today on whether a lawsuit challenging Illinois’s marriage equality ban can proceed.  These are the Darby v. Orr and Lazaro v. Orr cases which we have reported on before, and which are being considered by Circuit Judge Sophia Hall in tandem.

LGBT advocates pushed for an equal marriage bill during the last legislative session, but the state House recessed without calling up the legislation for a vote.  A renewed push to pass the measure is expected later this fall.  Illinois currently allows same-sex couples to enter into civil unions.

UPDATE: 1:22PM ET:: The judge has denied the motion to dismiss, and the lawsuit will go forward, according to reports.

EqualityOnTrial will have more on this story as it develops, including a link to the ruling when we get it.
