Equality news round-up: Virginia updates, and more

Uncategorized

– Virginia’s attorney general has filed a notice in Harris v. McDonnell telling the court he’ll no longer defend the state’s marriage equality ban in the case. The Harris case is a class-action filed by Lambda Legal, along with the ACLU and the ACLU of Virginia. His office has already filed the same notice in Bostic v. Rainey, the case that AFER attorneys Ted Olson and David Boies have joined. It appears from his answer to the complaint, filed along with the notice, that he’ll still oppose the class-action aspect of the Harris case.

– Gay and Lesbian Advocates and Defenders’ (GLAD) Mary Bonauto is joining the legal team fighting Michigan’s same-sex marriage and adoption bans in DeBoer v. Snyder. (EqualityOnTrial has previously reported on new counsel in the DeBoer case here.

– Richard Socarides has a New Yorker piece on United States v. Windsor.

– A Louisiana district court judge has declined to “unconsolidate” two marriage equality cases challenging the state’s ban. The parties had requested it so that one case could continue while the other is appealed.

– Northern Cyprus has decriminalized same-sex intimacy, and now it’s legal throughout Europe.

Thanks to Kathleen Perrin for these filings
