READ IT HERE: Response and reply briefs filed in Supreme Court petition in case of bakery’s refusal to make same-sex wedding cake
December 14, 2016
The response and reply briefs have been filed in the Masterpiece Cakeshop case, involving a bakery’s refusal to make a cake for a same-sex wedding. The bakery lost the case and had to pay a fine; now they’ve taken the challenge to the Supreme Court based on First Amendment grounds. The original petition is linked here.
The two responses (from the same-sex couple and the Colorado Civil Rights Commission) can be read here.
The reply can be read here.
The case has been distributed for the January 6 conference, when the Justices will privately consider whether to take up the case for full review including briefing and argument. The Court could grant or deny the case in the days after the conference or relist it for a later one. It takes four votes to grant review.
