Illinois County Clerks Announce They Will Oppose Marriage Equality in Court

Two Illinois county clerks file a motion in the combined Darby/Lazaro case requesting to intervene in defense of the state’s civil unions law.  The two clerks are Kerry Hirtzel, a Republican from downstate Effingham County, and Christie Webb, a Democrat from central Illinois’s Tazewell County.  The filings argue that if no state officials defend the law in court, a ruling could create one set of marriage rules for Cook County and another for the other counties in Illinois.
