Prop 8 Trial Closing Arguments Held in San Francisco

In San Francisco, Judge Vaughn Walker hears closing arguments in the Prop 8 trial.  Speaking on behalf of the plaintiffs, Ted Olson once again stresses that marriage is a fundamental right and that Prop 8 places gay couples in a separate category, allowing them the rights and responsibilities of marriage but not the name, thereby lessening their relationships in the eyes of society.

Charles Cooper, the attorney defending Prop 8, argues that allowing gay couples to marry will change the definition of marriage and that California had a rational governmental interest in passing the law to promote responsible procreation among straight couples.  The proper place to conduct the debate about marriage equality, he posits, is with the people and with the legislature, and he urges Judge Walker to allow Prop 8 to stand.
