Prop 8 Trial To Be Televised, Judge Rules

Judge Vaughn Walker announces that the Prop 8 trial will be televised to the public, making it the first federal trial in California to be broadcast.  His ruling comes over the objection of the Prop 8 proponents’ that doing so will lead to intimidation and harassment of witness who planned to testify in support of Prop 8.

Although most federal trials are not televised, a pilot program conducted by the Ninth Circuit Court of Appeals at the time allows district court judges to petition the appellate court for permission to broadcast specific trial.  Judge Walker’s order, which had to be approved by the Ninth Circuit’s chief judge, would enable live video feeds of the trial to courthouses in San Francisco, Pasadena, Seattle, Portland and Chicago.  The footage would be available on YouTube as well, although not as a livestream.
