Supreme Court Temporarily Stays Broadcast of Prop 8 Trial

The Supreme Court temporarily stays Judge Walker’s decision to publicly broadcast the Prop 8 trial, postponing a long-term decision until after it hears arguments about the possible impacts such a broadcast could have on the trial.  The Supreme Court’s stay would allow live streaming to other rooms in the same courthouse, but not those in other cities, and will expire at 4 p.m. on January 13, 2010.  The decision is 8-1, with Justice Stephen Breyer writing in a dissent that he agrees with the other justices that “further consideration is warranted” but believes that no stay need be put in place in the meantime.
